3DVC Educational Games
3DVC makes educational games for Carleton University and the Calgary School Board. Mousse was contracted to help them create the games below.
Webalive technology tends to restrict graphics and game mechanics. The challenge then, is to turn these limitations into an advantage. I proposed to do this by harnessing limited player options(essentially just jumping from platform to platform) to create the kind of cleverly escalating challenge reminiscent of many of today’s ipad apps. If all anyone can do is jump from moving platform to moving platform, then perhaps these platforms should reveal a plethora “mover typologies” and unexpected patterns level by level. The game, as a designer, was to exploit movers as cleverly and exhaustively as possible. Below are two of the early sketches expressing this idea. Though the final game loses the intent of these sketches, I still believe, that a simple 3d “jumping game”, devoid of most bells and whistles and exploiting a wide range of mover patterns, would be a hit.
The project ended-up becoming a space themed platformer of simplified design. The initial level layout, including teleporters and movers was done by myself. Texturing and polish of most elements was done by Walter.
This second project hosted a wide array of team games on a deserted floating asteroid. The modelling and texturing was done by myself, while game mechanics were installed by Walter.
